World's largest Ro-Ro ship BYD Shenzhen ready to carry your vehicles..

Chinese automotive company BYD Auto has unveiled the BYD Shenzhen, the world’s largest roll-on/roll-off (RoRo) vehicle carrier, capable of transporting up to 9,200 cars.

This state-of-the-art vessel, named after BYD’s hometown, recently undocked from Yangzhou Port in eastern China, marking a pivotal moment in the company’s maritime logistics capabilities.

Vessel specifications and capabilities

The BYD Shenzhen measures 219 meters in length and 37.7 meters in width, with a draft of 9 meters. It boasts a maximum speed of 18.5 knots (approximately 34.3 km/h), making it a formidable presence on the seas.

A RoRo ship allows vehicles to be driven on and off using built-in ramps, streamlining the loading and unloading processes without the need for external handling equipment.

Environmental innovations

The BYD Shenzhen is equipped with LNG dual-fuel technology, enabling it to operate on both liquefied natural gas and traditional marine fuels.

This flexibility not only enhances fuel efficiency but also reduces emissions, aligning with global efforts to minimize the environmental impact of maritime operations. Additionally, the vessel incorporates energy-saving devices to further optimize operational efficiency.

Notably, it is the first ship to feature BYD’s proprietary stationary storage batteries, which are likely intended to power the ship during docking or in low-emission zones, thereby reducing fuel consumption and emissions during these critical operations.

Strategic expansion of BYD’s maritime fleet

The introduction of the BYD Shenzhen marks the fourth addition to BYD’s growing fleet of car carriers.

The company has outlined ambitious plans to operate a total of eight such vessels by early 2026, underscoring its strategic commitment to enhancing global distribution capabilities.

This expansion is particularly significant as BYD continues to scale its international presence in the electric vehicle (EV) market.

BYD’s vertical integration strategy is evident not only in its manufacturing processes but also in its logistics operations. In addition to producing vehicles, the company manufactures its own battery packs and cells, owns lithium mines, and operates an EV insurance company in China.

This comprehensive control over its supply chain enables BYD to manage costs effectively and maintain high standards of quality across all facets of its operations.

Previous milestones in BYD’s maritime ventures

BYD Auto is not a newcomer to shipping having already achieved several milestones in this area.

In January 2024, BYD introduced its first car carrier, the BYD Explorer No.1, which was chartered to the company by another owner.

This was followed by the BYD Changzhou in December 2024, a vessel with a capacity of 7,000 cars that embarked on its maiden voyage to Europe carrying 5,000 EVs.

Most recently, the BYD Hefei, another 7,000-car carrier, set sail in January 2025, further bolstering the company’s shipping capabilities.

Global market impact and prospects

BYD’s aggressive expansion of its maritime fleet is a strategic response to the increasing global demand for electric vehicles. In 2024, the company exported 417,204 EVs, marking a 71.9% increase from the previous year.

These exports accounted for approximately 10% of BYD’s total passenger vehicle sales, which reached 4.25 million units globally.

The enhanced shipping capacity provided by vessels like the BYD Shenzhen is expected to facilitate more efficient distribution of vehicles to international markets, thereby supporting the company’s growth objectives.

As part of its ongoing international expansion, BYD recently launched the Atto 3 electric crossover in the South Korean market, with plans to introduce the Seal sedan and Sealion 07 SUV later this year.

The deployment of advanced carriers such as the BYD Shenzhen will play a crucial role in ensuring the timely and efficient delivery of these vehicles to consumers worldwide.

Conclusion

The unveiling of the BYD Shenzhen represents a significant advancement in automotive maritime logistics, reflecting BYD’s dedication to innovation, environmental stewardship, and global market expansion.

As the company continues to grow its fleet and enhance its logistical capabilities, it is well-positioned to meet the rising global demand for electric vehicles and to solidify its standing as a leader in the automotive industry.
